Younger kids could simply colour the map in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

2. Bandura

The bandura is a traditional plucked string folk instrument that combines elements of the zither and the lute.

You can hear how it sounds here.

3. Borscht

Borscht is a traditional soup in East European made from beetroot, which gives it its distinctive red color.

Why not try making your own?

4. Chernobyl

The biggest nuclear disaster in history took place at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986.

This would be a great way to start a discussion on the pros and cons of nuclear power with your teen, or to look at the history of nuclear energy with older kids.

5. Cherries

Both sweer and sour varieties of cherry are grown in Ukraine and they are the 9th largest producer of cherries in the world.

6. Ciconia

The white stork is the national bird of Ukraine, a symbol of family, loyalty and patriotism.

Many Ukrainians feel they have a special relationship with the white stork and a stork nesting on the roof of your house is said to bring good luck.

7. Khata

A khata is a traditional Ukrainian house, made from wood and still found in country villages.

8. The Motherland Monument

The Motherland Monument stands outside Kyiv, a monument to the USSR's victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

9. Saint Sophia Cathedral

The beautiful Saint Sophia Cathedral is located in Kyiv, Ukraine.

It is a supreme example of early Rus-Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and is one of the city's best-known landmarks.

The cathedral is a museum and houses a remarkable collection of mosaics and frescoes of that period.

10. Sunflower

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and its oil is one of Ukraine's biggest exports.

The sunflower has also become a symbol of peace and resistance in Ukraine, and a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine around the world.

11. Viburnum

Viburnum opulus (kalyna) is a national symbol and an important element of traditional Ukrainian folk culture.

It is an emblem for the Koliada (Christmas) festivities and a key element of a traditional wreath.
